What OSINT means

Open Source Intelligence is the structured assessment of publicly accessible information. Sources may include published profiles, company websites, press reports and lawfully accessible registers. Not every register is freely accessible; access conditions and privacy requirements must be respected. OSINT does not mean breaking into accounts or bypassing access controls.

Which information may matter?

  • Public travel plans, location details and regularly visible routines.
  • Contact details or private information in old profiles and publications.
  • Family information that other people may also have shared.
  • Visible connections between professional and private profiles.

Practical steps to reduce exposure

Review public profiles and location sharing. Limit the visibility of private posts and avoid publishing travel details in real time where possible. Discuss with family members which information should be protected together. This does not require giving up a professional online presence entirely.

Protect accounts and devices

Use unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication where available. Keep devices and applications updated and review account sessions and recovery options. A VPN does not hide information you have published publicly and is not a substitute for account protection. A pseudonym must not be used to provide false identity details in binding transactions.

A transparent assessment

A digital security review should identify the sources checked, relevant findings and practical actions. Information about third parties should not be collected indiscriminately. If threats occur, preserve evidence and coordinate further steps with appropriate contacts. Digital safeguards can reduce exposure but cannot guarantee complete anonymity.
